Physiotherapy for Sciatica
Sciatica is a condition characterized by pain, numbness or tingling which travels along the path of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the thickest nerve in the body and runs from the low back through the hips, buttocks, and branches into each leg to the bottom of the feet. It provides both motor and sensory functions to the legs and feet.
Sciatica occurs when there is pressure or irritation on the sciatic nerve, which is caused by other conditions such as a herniated disc, facet dysfunction, stenosis, muscle tension (ie piriformis), and/or SIJ/hip dysfunction. Symptoms may feel worse with sitting, standing, walking, or bending. A registered Physiotherapist can assess you to determine the cause of your Sciatica and tailor an effective treatment plan. Treatment can include manual therapy, modalities, exercise, acupuncture, and education.
Manual therapy techniques such as spinal mobilization and manual traction can help to reduce pain, numbness, and tingling. These techniques involve skilled hands-on movement to the spine, with the goal of increasing the range of motion and function.
Exercise is also an important component of physiotherapy for sciatica. After an assessment, we can determine which muscles need to be targeted for stretching and strengthening. Stretching exercises help to improve flexibility and reduce tension in the muscles surrounding the sciatic nerve. Strengthening exercises help to improve the stability of the spine, pelvis, and legs to reduce pain and the risk of re-injury.
In addition to manual therapy and exercise, education is an important aspect of physiotherapy for sciatica. Your Physiotherapist may provide guidance on proper posture and body mechanics and tips for reducing the risk of re-injury.
Overall, physiotherapy is an effective treatment for sciatica and can help to reduce pain, improve mobility, and prevent future episodes of this condition. However, it’s important to work closely with a registered Physiotherapist to develop a personalized treatment plan. At Physiocure Physiotherapy and Rehab Ctr, we have the experience to help you with your needs and goals.
